Leather care mistakes to avoid

Cracked bolsters almost always trace back to the wrong cleaner, not age. Modern car leather wears a thin factory coating — strip it once and the damage shows up a year later.

Skip all-purpose cleaner

All-purpose cleaners are too alkaline for coated leather. Use a dedicated leather cleaner, work a small area at a time, and wipe — never scrub — with a soft brush.

Condition while damp

Conditioner bonds best while the hide is still slightly damp from cleaning. A thin, even layer twice a year beats one heavy greasy coat.

Keep gloss off the wheel

Glossy dressings look rich in photos and feel slippery in hands. Leave steering wheels matte for grip — shine belongs on the dash, not where you steer.
